The Glacier National Park near El Calafate

Wednesday Jan. 8, 2014

We headed out of El Calafate to the glacier area. It is a desert area here but at the glacier it is very rainy and cool. The glacier is about 50 miles away so not very far to change from brown scenery to green.

We went on a boat but it was almost impossible to get decent photos since it was raining so hard. The glacier was next to the boat , but that did not matter due to the foggy and rainy conditions. Wouldn't you know, once we disembarked, the sun came out. We then headed over to a catwalk to see the glacier for above and more. That was wonderful, even though the rain came and went.

This was written on the National Glacier Park brochure. This was the English version.

We later had lunch near the base of the glacier and headed back to El Calafate. We had the rest of the late afternoon to ourselves. We got some nice photos of some of the surrounding area along with flamingos. The town is also quite newly renovated, the highway to the National Glacier Park is only 5 years old and the airport was also built recently. Tourism in this area has really helped the local economy. The glacier area has more than 2000 guests a day.

The empanadas that we had with lunch were really good.

Here are a couple of local beers that Brian or Garrison might enjoy. Walt did.
