More on Jan. 1st.

Continuation of Jan. 1

In the afternoon we went on our zodiacs once again and went to a penguin colony. We got off of the zodiac by sliding on the pontoon portion, swinging our legs over the side and getting into the water which was rock covered. The rocks were quite slippery so walking with caution was a must in order to get to shore. We have long rubber boots which are under our waterproof pants. Our feet did not get wet but we were concerned about being in the water anyway.

We walked around on the island in some fairly deep wet snow to get photos of the Gentoo penguins. This particular area is noted for that particular breed. They have a orange bill and orange feet. We are supposed to stay at least 15 feet away from them, but sometimes the penguins get closer to you than that.

After about an hour we got back on the zodiac in similar fashion as getting off. We sat on the pontoon, swung our legs in and then slid to position or stood and walked carefully to the other side of the zodiac. We then cruised around icebergs and saw various types of birds, seals, and penguins porpoising in the water. This journey around in the water was also about an hour. We then headed back to the ship to hit the club and have a liquid refreshment before our dinner. We got lots of fresh air today.

This iceberg had a tunnel that we used to photograph another zodiac.

This seal looks like a big slug on this iceberg.

This little penguin is just jumping into the water. Notice the little splash.

Our ship waiting for our return.

We ended our day with the sun going behind the mountains. It really was still very light out until midnight. We did not stay up any longer than that to see how long daylight is. We have heard it is almost 24 hours.
