Drake Passage on Return Trip

Sunday Jan. 5, 2014

The ships is rocking and rolling today. It is very difficult to walk on the ship which mean a lot of seasickness. Not a good thing. It will probably continue for the whole day but hopefully it will calm down a bit tomorrow. We have a very strong wind hitting the ship sideways which makes it very problematic for trying to have a smooth sailing.

Walt tried to take a few photos. It it really is hard to show the waves and ship rolling. It just doesn't capture the true essence of the movement.

We had lunch with Carol, the Quark Ocean Diamond Historian. This is her last voyage since she will be going back to assist her 88 year old mother. She is from the Sacramento, CA area. She told us this is The Drake Passage Shake.

There have been some severe winter storms in the east and extreme cold areas in the Midwest, so it is going to be a long winter with difficult travel situations. We are hoping that Nicole is not stuck in the midst of all of this awful weather when trying to get back to CA.

We are in the Drake Passage for today and tomorrow, so the ship has various lectures concerning history, geology and wildlife. They also, had an auction to raise funds for research of the penguins and more.
