Port Lockroy & Jougla Point and Paradise Harbor

Thursday Jan. 2, 2014

After breakfast we had a lecture about Sir Shackleton who made several attempts to Antartica along other expeditions. It was very interesting but as you can imagine, life was very difficult for all involved. Then we were on zodiacs again to go to Port Lockroy and Jougla Point.

This is the store and museum. Population 4.

Port Lockroy right now has 4 young women living there. They will be there for 4 months which is summer here. There is a shop with lots of little items and a museum. You can mail a postcard from here and it will take approximately 4 to 6 months to arrive to its destination. There could be only 30 people in the building at a time so we did need to wait our turn. The wind is much cooler today than yesterday. We also saw more Gentoo penguins as well as numerous other seabirds. We returned to the ship and had lunch while the ship headed over to Paradise Harbor.

Gentoo penguins.

Paradise Harbor used to be a harbor for whalers. It is a deep glaciated bay around this harbor. We did hike up a mountain here and did not realize how high it really was until we were on our zodiac from below. We were actually on the 7th continent when we got to this area. The other places we have been were coves and islands. This time we were on the actual Antartica peninsula. We tried to take a photo of each other making snow angels in the snow. It was neat to actually get on the actual continent. Our zodiac cruise took us to some huge glacier areas which will soon drop off in the water. We passed numerous icebergs along the way as well as locating wildlife. Today it was pretty chilly and we were glad to return to the ship. We had approximately an hour for the hike and an hour and 10 min. for the cruise. That wind was really noticeable on the zodiac.

Base Brown which is on the continent rather than on an island used to be an Argentina research area. Beautiful views from around the harbor here by hiking up the mountain.

We made it to the 7th continent.

On to the top of the peak.

Walt at the top. it doesn't look steep, but it surely was.

It is hard to visualize on a photo how large some of these icebergs or glaciers really are.

We relaxed with a beverage in the Club Bar this evening. We had to since we were busy most of the day.
