Fiji Tour

The weather is quite warm and humid. We started our tour at 10:00am with a trip to the Market Place. We checked out the local tropical produce as well as fresh fish of the day catch. You can purchase the Taro plant which they call Daro. They do not make poi like they do in Hawaii. Here they cook it more like potatoes.

Next to the Gardens of the Sleeping Giant where there are lots of varieties of orchids. We meandered along a path as we were listening to a guide explain the kinds and types of orchids and plantlife. These gardens were originally owned by Raymond Burr who played Perry Mason and Ironside.

We walked around an old village which now has about 500 occupants. There is a chief house and of course a church. This particular one was a Methodist church. The extended family and all live in one home, so the homes tend to be stretched out. Most are constructed of concrete due to cyclones which do hit here. In fact they had a terrible storm in Dec. 2012 and some people were without electricity until Feb. Everything is slow in Fiji, so things do not get completed in a timely fashion.

We had a lovely overlook from the Rosie Holiday property and then some tropical fruits, coconut and juice to taste. It was good photo shoot spot.

Then onto a Hindu temple which was constructed entirely with materials from India as well as constructed by Indian contractors. It was in the very colorful India style.

Shopping was next but not much to choose from except tourist stuff and expensive items. Tonight dinner at The Salts restaurant on the beach and watch the sunset.
